The concept of flight has always held humankind's imagination captive—yet making that concept a reality continues to baffle even the most ingenious innovators. We recently got a few insights and a lesson in aerodynamics from NYU Professor of Mathematics at the Applied Mathematics Laboratory, Leif Ristroph. He explains that mathematicians and physicists studying flight and aerodynamics view water and air both as fluids and showed us his experiments—from flapping machines to handmade flying robots. By recreating successful methods of air and water movement found in nature, Ristroph is hoping to better understand the science behind it and potentially make new flying machines.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) | Computational Fluid Dynamics NASA Simulation Videos This video highlights the 1988 CFD graphics which show zero gravity phenomena, boundary layers, aeroelasticity, rotor blades, stators, jet ground effects, the F-18, flow about the shuttle, hypersonic flow, and flow in an artificial heart. Released Jan. 1988. This video also presents highlights of 1989's CFD graphics, which show shuttle flight problems, F-18 flows, artificial heart, and rotorstrator with more complex blades. noodls 2015-03-12In physics, fluid dynamics is a sub-discipline of fluid mechanics that deals with fluid flow—the natural science of fluids (liquids and gases) in motion. It has several subdisciplines itself, including aerodynamics (the study of air and other gases in motion) and hydrodynamics (the study of liquids in motion). Fluid dynamics has a wide range of applications, including calculating forces and moments on aircraft, determining the mass flow rate of petroleum through pipelines, predicting weather patterns, understanding nebulae in interstellar space and reportedly modeling fission weapon detonation. Some of its principles are even used in traffic engineering, where traffic is treated as a continuous fluid.
Fluid dynamics offers a systematic structure—which underlies these practical disciplines—that embraces empirical and semi-empirical laws derived from flow measurement and used to solve practical problems. The solution to a fluid dynamics problem typically involves calculating various properties of the fluid, such as velocity, pressure, density, and temperature, as functions of space and time.
